Dementia with Dignity (Past event)

With Patti Wick

Join us for a conversation and Q&A with Patti Wick, a longtime teacher and an impassioned advocate for dementia awareness, research and cure.

About the Speaker

Patti Wick, a longtime teacher and school leader in Sonoma County, CA, lost both her mother and mother-in-law to Alzheimers. It was the catalyst for her to become an impassioned advocate for dementia awareness, research, and a cure. Several times a week, she had attended live music events at her “mom’s” memory care facility, and through contagious enthusiasm, coaxed the residents into singing and/or dancing, and became a joyful fixture at these events. For six years, she facilitated support groups for families dealing with dementia, and she has presented at conferences to champion efforts that bring schools and senior communities together in intergenerational partnerships. Patti has volunteered with the Alzheimer’s Association since 2013 and is a valued committee member for the Sonoma/Marin Walk to End Alzheimers. Last year she ranked 17th in the nation by raising close to $40,000 in donations for the Walk. In partnership with the Alzheimer’s Association and Santa Rosa’s Luther Burbank Center for the Arts, she currently facilitates a sing-along group for those with dementia and their family and care partners. In spite of the pandemic, they’ve continued these monthly gatherings, but shifted to Zoom. Patti looks forward to the day when there is a cure, but in the meantime, she’ll be happy when she can return to singing and dancing in person with those who have dementia.
